Álex de la Iglesia translates Lovecraft’s mythos out of old New England and the shadow of Cotton Mather into the Vatican’s shadow in present-day Spain — transforming the source while remaining faithful to it. God bless cultural appropriation — it’s what culture is for. Scientologists will likely dislike what is introduced in Season 2 and will want to stop after Season 1.

The photography is impressive throughout, though some scenes — even by American standards — are not easy to watch. The title sequence stands on its own, even apart from the context of the show, and might well make Mel Gibson blanch. But if you watched Mel’s Passion — and I did — without needing therapy afterward, you’ll likely appreciate seeing Iglesia’s interpretation.
